Horanggasy Creative Studio, est situé dans le quartier Yangrim-Dongune, une zone historique de la ville de Gwangju, en Corée du Sud, où les premiers missionnaires se sont installés dans cette zone sauvage et marginale de la ville au début du 20e siècle et y ont fondé des établissements d'enseignement et un hôpital modernes, ouvrant la voie à la modernisation de la ville.

Horanggasy Creative Studio est un bâtiment en briques rouges ternies, construit dans les années 1950 pour servir de résidence aux missionnaires et abandonné depuis leur départ de Gwangju en 1998. Il a été utilisé comme dortoir pour les étudiants de l'université théologique de Honam, puis est resté vide pendant un certain temps jusqu'à ce qu'Artzoo le rénove et le transforme en un espace de résidence d'artistes au début de l'année 2014, avec huit salles de travail claires et propres équipées d'une cuisine, d'un hall et de salles de bains communes.

Located in the hub of Yangnim-dong’s historical site, Horanggasy Creative Studio provides a multidisciplinary artist-in-residence program annually with the purpose of supporting young artists (both domestic and international) as well as contributing to the local community.

The program is held in a building that was once used as private housing for the Missionaries in 1904. During their time here, the Missionaries played a pivotal role in the modernization of Gwangju through the works such as women’s rights, medical care, and education.

Gwangju is also considered the home of Korean art, thus Asia’s first and most prestigious international contemporary art exhibition called “Gwangju Biennale” has been held here since 1995. Additionally, Korea’s largest cultural and artistic complex called Asia Culture Center is located nearby the Studio.

Despite Horanggasy Creative Studio being in the center of the city, its location being at the bottom of Yangnim Mountain creates a harmonious juxtaposition. Various prominent Korean artists in the past have acquired artistic inspiration just by walking around in the Yangnim-dong neighborhood.

Regarding hospitality, there are three general hospitals, libraries, and traditional markets all within the walking distance of the Studio that allows the artists to fully dedicate their time to creative activities without having to worry about basic necessities.

Starting from 2021, Art Polygon attached to the Horanggasy Creative Studio has been nominated to be used as one of the exhibition sites for “Gwangju Biennale.” Since the beginning of the establishment of the residence program, there have been various cross-cultural interactions between artists from Munich, Lisbon, Italy, and Vienna. Our goal is to continue to provide artists from various backgrounds a creative space and aid them in researching and producing art. We wish to become the artist-in-residence program with history and prestige.
